Minor accidents can happen anywhere and every day. Sometimes due to poor maintenance, manufacturing faults, or too much haste. One of the most common accidents is breaking a key and getting it stuck in the lock.

The worst part of this problem is that the solution cannot be postponed when it happens with house keys. Before you call a locksmith, try these tricks to remove a broken key from the lock without having to dismantle everything.

  1. Needle-Nose Pliers or Tweezers:
    • If the key is protruding even slightly, you might be able to grasp it with needle-nose pliers or tweezers and gently pull it out. Be careful not to push it further into the lock.
  2. Super Glue Method:
    • Apply a small amount of super glue to the end of a thin object, such as a toothpick or bobby pin.
    • Insert the glue-covered end into the lock and press it against the broken key fragment.
    • Hold it in place for a few moments to allow the glue to adhere to the key.
    • Slowly pull the key out with the object once the glue has dried.
  3. Jigsaw Blade or Hacksaw Blade:
    • If part of the key is still protruding, you can try sliding a thin jigsaw blade or hacksaw blade alongside the key and using it to pull the key out.
    • Be extremely careful not to damage the lock mechanism or push the key further in.
  4. Lock Lubrication:
    • Apply a lubricant such as WD-40 or graphite powder into the keyhole.
    • Wiggle the broken key fragment gently while trying to pull it out. The lubricant might help loosen the key and make it easier to remove.
  5. Locksmith’s Extractor Tool:
    • If you’re unable to remove the broken key using DIY methods, consider purchasing a locksmith’s extractor tool.
    • These tools are specifically designed to remove broken keys from locks and can be found at most hardware stores.
    • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when using the extractor tool to avoid damaging the lock.

Before attempting any of these methods, it’s essential to assess the situation carefully and proceed with caution. If you’re unsure or uncomfortable attempting the removal yourself, it’s best to contact a professional locksmith for assistance. Trying to force the key out or using excessive pressure can cause further damage to the lock, potentially making the situation worse.
